Glossary

MDR objects

work

A work in the MDR is a logical 'entry' in the repository. For example, an academic paper can be a single work. A work has a metadata record which describes the work, and contains one or more items (files).

publication

Publication metadata

A type of work that includes journal articles, proceedings, and presentations. See also Publication metadata

dataset

Dataset metadata

A unit of data compiled for a defined topic. In the context of MDR, datasets are a type of work that includes experimental data, materials datasheets, software, and multimedia. See also Dataset metadata

item

An item is the smallest unit of content in the repository. You can think of items as files uploaded to the repository. An item belongs to a work, and may be one of many items to belong to the same work.

collection

A collection is a logical group of works. When a subject matter spans multiple works, they can be managed and displayed together by having the works belong to a collection. Researchers who wish to organize their work using collections: please contact the system administrators.

Metadata and identifiers

metadata

Metadata is information about content in the repository. Metadata can be bibliographic (e.g. publication date and journals), administrative (managing organization), or scientific (specimens and instruments). MDR aims to provide a system where research data are stored and searchable with materials-scientific metadata.

DOI

A Digital Object Identifier is a persistent identifier for documents on the Internet. It is especially common for academic papers to be assigned a DOI. By accessing the URL where the DOI is appended after https://doi.org/, the user can be redirected to the URL which actually hosts the document. There are a number of DOI registration agencies, but NIMS is a member of DataCite and assigns DataCite DOIs to works deposited into MDR.

ISSN

International Standard Serial Number is an eight-digit serial number used to uniquely identify a serial publication, such as a journal. The number is commonly written in a hyphenated pair of four digits each. Most journals have a number for the print version (p-ISSN) and the electronic version (e-ISSN). (It does not matter which one you write for MDR metadata.) Not to be confused with ISBN for books.

ORCID

Open Researcher and Contributor ID

Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is an identifier for individual researchers. This is useful to tell researchers apart even when they have the same name or when a reseacher changes their name. https://orcid.org/ You can look up NIMS researchers' ORCIDs using the Researchers Directory Service SAMURAI.

RDF

Short for Resource Description Framework, a standard model to express information on the WWW. By linking together metadata using RDF, we can let computers deal with data efficiently. MDR stores all metadata using RDF.

Rights and licenses

license
rights statement

When a copyright holder allows other people the right to share, adopt, or otherwise use the copyrighted work, this action is called licensing and the document that details the conditions is called a license/licence or a rights statement. For academic papers, the copyright holder may be the author or the publisher, depending on the exact agreement between them). See also our list of copyright policies for common journals.

Creative Commons license

(Creative Commons Japan)

Creative Commons license is a system of licenses which allows copyright holders to offer their contents under more relaxed conditions than "all rights reserved" but retain more rights than releasing them to the public domain -- hence "some rights reserved". The licensor can choose a combination of four conditions summarized in the table below. For details, see https://creativecommons.org/
