Starting June 15, 2026, researchers from universities and research institutions can now register and publish data on the Materials Data Repository (MDR).

MDR publishes a wide range of materials research data under as open-access, allowing anyone to freely search, view, and use the data.
This expansion of eligibility is expected to promote the accumulation and publication of materials data, leading to increased utilization in data-driven research and AI research.

Key Benefits of Registering and Publishing Data on MDR

A DataCite DOI is assigned, ensuring permanent access to the data.

This makes it easier to cite the data in papers and other publications, facilitating recognition of the research results.
Users can select and specify a license, allowing the data to be published as research data usable for AI.

By clearly stating the terms of use, the reuse of data for a wide range of applications, including AI research, is promoted.
Inclusion in external databases such as the "Data Citation Index" enhances international visibility.

MDR has been adopted as a data source for the Web of Science's "Data Citation Index."
Comprehensive search using materials metadata is possible

Specialized materials metadata and full-text search make it easier for your data to be discovered alongside other registered data.

For those who wish to register and publish data

Data registration and publication are available to those who meet the following requirements. Additionally, there are certain conditions regarding the data that can be registered and published.

Eligibility for Data Registration and Publication

You must have both a DICE account and an ORCID iD
Your affiliated institution must be a member of the ORCID Japan Consortium
Your institution must have listed the institution name and your valid affiliation period on your ORCID record

Data Eligible for Registration and Publication

The data must be related to materials research
The data must be publicly available already

National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) has moved the system infrastructure of the materials data platform "DICE" to the public cloud and added a system RDE that automatically structures and stores research data, thereby which has greatly enhanced the system's ability to collect and accumulate data from users nationwide. In addition, NIMS Materials Database "MatNavi" was improved to enhance user convenience greatly.

New service: RDE (data storage and sharing service)

The DICE has been publishing and operating the NIMS Materials Database (MatNavi) and the Materials Data Repository (MDR), and now a new data storage and sharing service (RDE) has been added. (https://dice.nims.go.jp/services/RDE/)
● What RDE can do
- Quick online registration of research data generated daily in laboratories.
- Registered data is automatically structured and stored in a reusable format.
- Accumulated data can be used in the research group's dedicated area or shared with other research groups. Furthermore, the data can be shared over a wide area.

MatNavi is now easier to use.

(1) Polymer Database (PoLyInfo) and Metallic Material Database (Kinzoku): The databases have been restructured to facilitate data management and linkage between data, and search and display screens have been improved.
(2) NIMS Structural Materials Data Sheet Online: A new drawing method has been adopted, and the files can be viewed using any browser.
(3) Inorganic Materials Database (AtomWork): The interface has been improved to be easier to view and use.
(4) Metal Segregation Prediction System (SurfSeg) and Interface Bonding Prediction System (InterChemBond): Algorithms have been added.

Centralized user authentication

A new authentication system has been introduced for the purpose of linking all DICE services. By using the DICE account (common ID) granted by this system, user authentication will be centralized. Users will be able to access each DICE service with a single sign-on as long as they meet the terms of use of each service.

NIMS is promoting the strategic collection, accumulation, distribution, and utilization of high-quality materials data from industry and academia as a "Data Core Center" under the "Materials DX Platform Initiative" of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. We will continue to develop and expand DICE's services and strongly support data-driven materials research to be developed on a nationwide scale.

Materials Data Platform Center, Research and Services Division of Materials Data and Integrated System (MaDIS), at the National Institute of Materials Science (NIMS) released the "Materials Data Repository (MDR)" on June 15th, 2020, to contribute to the promotion of the data-driven research in the materials science field. https://mdr.nims.go.jp

Publication of research results has been done by publishing papers and presenting at conferences. However, further use of the data is becoming increasingly important by releasing the supporting data with the research results or by releasing the data by itself independently.
MDR is a data repository to collect and store papers, presentation materials, and related materials data to accumulate and release them in a form suitable for the promotion of materials research and materials informatics. Users can search the documents and the data from information (metadata) such as sample, instrument, method, and from the full text of the deposited data, to browse and download them freely. User registration is not required and there is no charge for use. Furthermore, the contents of the existing NIMS repositories (PubMan for papers and Imeji for image data) and a part of MatNavi database (READS this time and FGM in July) will be transferred to MDR.
Materials data are being collected from NIMS and related institutes and will be posted to expand the data as they become available. In the future, data from cooperating organizations and the general users will be collected and stored to further accumulate materials data. Overview

Materials Data Platform Center, Research and Services Division of Materials Data and Integrated System (MaDIS), The National Institute of Materials Science (NIMS) launches the web site of the Materials Data Platform DICE on June 15th, 2020, which contributes to the promotion of the data-driven research in the materials science field. https://dice.nims.go.jp/

DICE is an unprecedented system that handles materials data from the point of entry (data collection) to the point of exit (data service). At the point of entry, we implemented a high-throughput and high-quality collection/registration system from multiple information sources such as experimental and measurement equipment, literature, and repositories. The system also adds to the value of the stored data by hierarchical and structural interpretation of data in RDF* format and connecting data by informatic methods such as Linked Data**. At the point of exit, DICE provides not only data visualization systems and various analysis software but also systems-scientific services that can offer a clue for solving materials development problems, such as materials informatics.

DICE will incorporate "NIMS Materials Database (MatNavi)" and "NIMS Materials Data Conversion Tools (M-DaC)", which are already in service, and "Materials Data Repository (MDR)", which is released today. A variety of services will be provided on DICE in the coming days, including the dissemination of related information and further expansion of data.
